A rare first edition of Robert Burns’ debut poetry collection, which was found in a barber shop has gone on display in Fife.

The book, titled Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, was found in a barber shop in Shrewsbury and is missing its initial pages as it is believed that the barber tore them out, so he could use them to clean his razors. A Burns enthusiast rescued the book after spotting it in the shop sometime in the late 1800s. It is now on display at the Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries in Fife until 5th February.

The book, commonly known as the Kilmarnock edition and is one of only 612 copies to have been printed. It is believed that there are only 84 left in existence. Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect will be displayed with other material, including around 1,700 other artefacts.
