Step back in time to Elizabethan Dorset as our living history specialists take on the characters of the 16th-century Martyn family of Athelhampton Hall. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of the year 1580 in this opportunity to turn back the clock to a time when life was very different.
You might find Margaret Martyn, the mistress of the house, discussing what will be cooked in the kitchen for dinner, giving the bailiff instructions for how the estate should be ordered, or perhaps at leisure, playing music or reading a book. Her grandchildren should be hard at work with their tutor, but have they escaped to have fun elsewhere? The steward might need your help when it comes to laying the table or serving dishes, while some of the pages might recruit you for their game of football. If you'd rather something less energetic, you can sample some of the food the kitchen have been working hard on, listen in on household gossip, or learn how to write with a quill from the scrivener. A multitude of crafts will be on display, from spinning to pewter casting, and everywhere you go, people will be more than willing to pause in their work and show you what it is that they're doing: ask as many questions as you like!
Be prepared to arrive when the doors open and spend the whole day in the house and gardens; in this fully interactive event, you are more than just a visitor - you will be able to spend a day as part of the Tudor community.
