There were 17 full participants who received an equal share, including the men who were at the robbery and two informants. The gang that carried out the robbery included 15 known criminals predominantly from South London. One member of the crew remains unknown, while another two were never charged due to a lack of evidence against them. The most well known member of the gang, Ronnie Biggs, rose to fame despite only having a minor role in the robbery.

He was a key informant and organiser of the hideout and is said to have insitgated the robbery. Allegedly, he had taken the idea to the The Firm, the Kray twin's gang before approaching the South West Gang.
