It is now over 75 years since the audacious efforts of Squadron 617, aka the Dam Busters, made history in WW2. Many of us will have heard about their bravery and perhaps seen the classic movie. But what was the experience really like for the squadron? How did their plans come to fruition and what was the true significance of the famous “Operation Chastise”?
For anyone who loves the elegance of a classic English garden, Lincolnshire has some of the most historic and beautiful outdoor spaces to visit in the UK. Designed and tended by some of the most famous gardeners and landscape designers over the centuries, “Bomber County” has everything from walled gardens to wild meadows and stately homes.
We have been advised that the revised start date for the Phase 2 works on site by the Ministry of Defence will be 16 April 2018 for (up to) a two week period.
I was recently reminded of a film called “Per Purum Tonantes”, made by a former student of mine at the Lincoln School of Media, George Horne. It’s an abridged version of a film he made about the night of the 18th February 1943, when Lancaster Bomber W4270 crashed in a farmer’s field during a training mission, resulting in the deaths of all seven of its crew. Lincolnshire historical researcher Di Ablewhite tells the story of how the film came to be made.
It never ceases to amaze us here at the Petwood when pieces of hotel history somehow make their way back to the hotel. In the case of the latest item to cross our hotel marketing executives’ desk, that history is over 100 years old and a unique record of a key moment in Petwood history.
We are very pleased to announce that today we have been awarded our Cycle Lincolnshire Accreditation as a Cycle Friendly location in the county. With our dedicated secure cycle storage and facilities alongside our Cycle And Go packages, the Petwood is the perfect place for exploring Bomber County on two wheels.

As a sign of our deep respect, on the day of Her late Majesty The Queen’s funeral, confirmed as Monday 19th September, we will close the hotel during the day.
Thomas Burkitt was born in January 1892 in Calcethorpe, a small hamlet 5 miles outside of Louth, Lincolnshire to Thomas Burkitt senior, a Farm Labourer. Young Thomas didn’t appear to want to work in the fields as his father had done and by the time of the 1911 census at the age of 19, he was working at Petwood as a Gardener alongside his brother Harry aged 25.
Thanks to unique permission from the RAF Museum Hendon, one of the most famous Victoria Crosses in British military history - that of Wing Commander Guy Gibson, Dambuster - will go on display in Lincolnshire in January 2020.
There can be few women in the history of Petwood who have made as much impact on the building and its history than its former owner, Lady Grace Blundell Maple.

The staff were fantastic, helpful, polite and couldn't do enough for you. The rooms were spacious and you didn't feel cramped. The food was exquisite, tasty, well cooked, imaginative and something to look forward to each mealtime. The building was lovely to look at in its Tudor style.I cannot praise Petwood Hotel enough.
Our wedding went perfectly and without a hitch, and I know it was down to Janet and the team working away in the background. My sister even wants Janet for her wedding (and she isn't even engaged yet). So thank you so much to the team for all the time and effort put in!
Outstanding performance from an excellent cast...Puck was absolutely fantastic...brilliant performance, capturing the essence of Puck perfectly!
Great performance the rain held off thoroughly enjoyed it
Incredible building with amazing history not least the 'Dambusters' 617 Squadron headquarters during World war 2 it's one of the only places you can see a Barnes Wallace Bouncing bomb, the grounds are beautiful as is the architecture. Stunning.
We happened upon the Petwood by chance and are very glad we did. We loved its history, especially in relation to the 2nd World War and the Dambusters squadron, and the way in which the hotel commemorated this through its use of memorabilia. The former officers' mess was a fascinating mini museum.
We stayed for 3.nights midweek offer, which was very good value. We had twin beds which were larger than normal sized single beds. The room was large and spacious. My husband said the full English breakfast was excellent. Staff were very helpful. We also booked the house tour which was very informative.
I'd have to say that the historical memorabilia relating to the hotel was the overall highlight. Loved its connection with the war and the Dambusters, and how this is commemorated, especially in the former officers' mess and Squadron Bar
I was fortunate to spend the day and night at this excellent hotel due to my daughter choosing it as her wedding venue. The service that the wedding party received was second to none. All of the staff went out of their way to make it a beautiful and very memorable occasion. The staff were friendly and helpful. The wedding meal and buffet was delicious.
We popped in for lunch and to have a look round to see the officers mess for 617 Dambusters Squadron. We were made very welcome - the Lincolnshire Sausages were fantastic. The place has been kept as is and the 40's feel is very evident. You must visit the Squadron Bar. It's now a shrine to the Dambusters and very interesting. Must go back and stay sometime.
We chose The Petwood for our wedding, with 30 guests. The event was a great success. We found staff well organised and very efficient, and they gave us exceptional, friendly and personal service and support, thinking of everything. If anything was needed on the day, they responded quickly.
My wife had a gift voucher for afternoon tea, from my Son’s girlfriend for her last birthday. We went to use it this Saturday and had our afternoon tea outside with our dog, Muffin. The food and service was superb, only topped by the stunning venue. The selection was spot on and each ‘course’ was fresh and tasty.
