After the death of King Alfred, his descendants continued to conquer the territory that was controlled by the Vikings. Under their rule, England became one single kingdom headed by Athelstan, who would lead a united country against future Viking raids. Viking rule would eventually come to an end after the death of King Erik Bloodaxe who died in battle.
After the 990s, England would suffer from numerous Viking attacks before being conquered again by the Danish king Svein Forkbeard. He died shortly after his victory, causing yet another war until the arrival of King Cnut. The rule of Cnut marked the highest point of Viking rule, things changed dramatically after the Battle of Hastings when the Viking age began to wane.
