After England emerged from the Roman occupation, the economy had collapsed and many of the towns and communities created under Roman rule had been abandoned. Several Germanic people and the Vikings began to invade and resettle in the area that would become England, causing new identities and cultures to emerge and resulting in a division of the land into kingdoms which were then run by a series of Anglo-Saxon monarchs, the best known of which came from the kingdom of Wessex.
