It is generally agreed that WWII officially began on 1st September 1939 when Nazi Germany, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland. This led the UK and France to declare war on Germany two days later. From late 1939 until 1941, Germany conquered or controlled much of continental Europe and became allied with Japan and Italy, with other countries joining at various points throughout the war. The war included campaigns in Africa and France, as well as the Blitz of the UK and fighting in the Balkans and Atlantic. The Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 was the largest land war in history.
